Many of my favorite hip hop records?

Are from so called one hit wonders.

Either single or album.

And if the general public truly understood just how damn hard it is to actually craft a hit record

They would appreciate the artists and culture much more.

LL Cool J is wack... typical New York false bravado (with unbelievable aggression). Granted I am from the West Coast; so maybe I just don't get it/him. I have one LL Cool J cut, and it's an instrumental.

Note: I'm not insulting New York. Biggie is my favorite rapper ever.

P.S.
On "Flava In Ya Ear" his verse was corny.

Niggas in this thread must be hitting the pipe... Smh lol! It's been a while since I've heard so much blasphemy. Tupac overrated....

Yeah some are taking it a bit too far boarded lining on extreme.

There's a fine line saying some is overrated in general or overrated because you don't particularly like it.

Most in this thread don't particularly like or get a particular artist so they think that the artist is overrated.

If millions of people like something and you don't, it's probably not the something that's wack.

Nothing personal at all... He's just one of those rappers that just didn't seem genuine to me. It seems like he's trying hard to be hard.

I have a playlist of all Biggie, Grand Daddy I.U., and others; but LL just doesn't cut the mustard to me.

I’ve always thought Lil Wayne was wack. For some reason he just never did it for me.

Other than Scarface, Will Smith is the greatest story-teller whoever did it.

It doesn’t sit well with me that Ms. Melodie doesn’t get the credit she deserves.

Kid Capri isn’t as good as he thinks he is. DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Cash Money, and Scram Jones can run rings around him on the turn tables.

Lyrically, Ghostface is heads and shoulders above everyone else in the Wu-Tang Clan.

For storytelling, I'd go Ice Cube and Biggie. These were very vivid storytellers to me.

Just because Biggie ain't record Brenda's having a baby and dear momma doesn't mean he wasn't equally introspective heartfelt vulnerable in his music.

What unpopular opinions do you have? Hip-Hop/Rap edition

I was not aware that I was limited to only voice opinions about music, of course we can ask the author of the thread?

Sometimes you just have to see why other people like it.

It's pretty common for a wedding client to send me a playlist full of wack music. When they're paying you enough to pay your rent in a single night you learn how to like it. At least until the check clears

All double disc hip-hop albums should have been one disc with those filler tracks removed.

OutKast was wack after Aquemini.

Jay-z got lucky DMX was a crackhead and poor businessman.

I wasn’t a fan of southern rap after 1999, especially all those ATL artist.

I don’t know what the fuck DJ Screw had y’all Texas and midwestern kats on but it explains a lot.

Biggie got the GAYEST line in hip-hop.

Ice Cube >>> Tupac

There is not a single rapper ever out of Florida I take seriously.

Missy Elliot >>> Lauren Hill

Juvenile is the best rapper out of NO.

Gangsta Boo is a highly underrated female rapper.

I got more…

Considering the state of music today, I’m going to have to disagree with this. However, I understand completely where you are coming from. But society have lowered its standards.

I have conflicted my dislike for something as being wack. I already have an “anti-popular” attitude so I dismiss a lot of shit off gate.

But I can’t co-sign mumble rap as great because it’s popular today.

Fabolous is a good rapper. But doesn't have any classic albums.
What's crazy is he has like 3-6 arguably classic mixtapes but not a single classic album in his catalog. Heck he's had 2 classic mixtape series but hasn't made single studio album that was more than passable.

I see your point, but I kind of disagree.

Lauryn Hill is hardly the first rapper to have way too many kids and a bunch of relationship dramas. It certainly didn't put the brakes on DMX or Mos Def.

She's also not the first person to be accused of using ghostwriters or committing copyright infringement. Everybody gets accused of that when they sell 10 million records.

IMO her biggest problem was that musically she couldn't get out of her own way. Whether or not she wrote all of her own lyrics she certainly had a lot of guidance on Miseducation. Afterwards the label gave her free rein to do whatever she wanted on the next project and she used that freedom poorly. She neglected the people and systems that made her successful on the last one.

The other issue is that she didn't like being a mega star. She wanted to be able to wake up at noon and go to the local Bodega in some sweatpants and flip-flops without paparazzi jumping out of the bushes. Or be able to go to the club and get drunk like a normal person without the press calling her self destructive.

Because even with all of her failings she could have easily made a career for herself as a guest vocalist. Busta rhymes has been doing that for 20 years. No reason she couldn't.

People forget how quick and fast her stardom came. No other female artist hit that stardom as fast as she did during that time.

Aaliyah was next but that got cut short, unfortunately. I’m still curious to know what her career would have been like. She was because more sensual/sexual and entering into Hollywood.
