I'm ok with the tariffs. I was ok with them on his first term. It was the main thing I agreed with him on and Biden obviously didn't change or get rid of them. I know it sounds wild in the current conversation, but this is something America needs because we've outsource our manufacturing base largely due to NAFTA and as an entrepreneur that in my opinion is a big part of why America was successful. We encouraged individual businesses and innovation and for the last 30+ years that shit has morphed into go work for a corporation and climb the ladder.

The story goes like this: the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the main governing body for college sports in the United States, has ruled on trans-identified volleyball players and testosterone levels. But the NYT chose a bizarre form of language to report the already extraordinary fact that a biological male with four times the level of testosterone as a biological woman is allowed to compete in women’s sport. It described women as “non-transgender women”.

To me it's a perfect example of the Democrats responding to Republican talking points rather than creating their own. Even worse, it was a piss poor response.
Violence against trans people skyrocketed under Trump, but did California's top cop Kamala Harris ever call it out? Did she ever say "As a law and order president I'm going to ensure that violent hate crimes against trans and other marginalized groups are prosecuted and punished to the full extent of the law." Because that matters a lot more than pronouns or who's on the swim team.

The problem is as more progressives join the party the more each individual groups demands and agendas come into play. The concerns of the LGBTQ community is seen with great annoyance by other communities even as everyone has gay and trans in their own families. And the concerns of the black community is met with this face
by other groups in the party because who gives a fuck about what black Americans think or feel.But this is the problem that comes with having a big tent. Different agendas tend to clash. The GOP doesn't have that problem because they largely congregate under one ideology social and fiscal conservativism to the point where people like gays submit their own agenda to serve the republican party. The charge for gay marriage and equality was led by liberals and progressives....not conservatives. Yet conservative gays benefited anyway. And then they vote trump in.
So the messaging from the Dems is scatter shot because they're trying to accommodate many different often clashing agendas.
The Dems as the party of openness and inclusivity have a conflict the GOP doesn't have because a conservative tenant is exclusivity.
Name another political party that requires it's members to qualify to join them rather than saying what can we do to earn your support??
Think about that. The ONLY reason there aren't more blacks in the party is because they don't want that influence literally muddying up their platform. Otherwise most blacks social stances actually align with conservatives more often than not but most blacks aren't republicans....3 guesses why that is?
It does two things. The corporations who moved manufacturing out the country in the 90s will have to start bringing more of that back to the US aka jobs. China has used US corporations moving manufacturing out of the US in the 90s by requiring US companies to partner with Chinese companies to set-up shop in China and they have almost no IP protection laws so they basically stole a bunch of IP to get a leg up and we are seeing the results of that. Electric vehicles, we can't compete with them. Solar which we were at the forefront of, now China has taken over that by just manufacturing our goods and copy IP and they do that shit well and in lot case same or better quality for less. It's not the most pinpoint accurate way of doing things, but China is running circles when comes to the trade deficit and this will bring them back to reality.

I think this is an extreme oversimplification of things, but that's why this thread is called unpopular opinions.
It is a simple explanation, and there's a broader discussion about it, but ultimately, I think there's more positive than negative in the long run.
But none of that never happens as implemented. Iphones Nike and numerous other major U.S. companies product will be continued to be made in China. Main reasoning is because U.S. consumers not willing to pay the price increase and accept low wages . Yeah it would be nice to have U.S. made which will create jobs....but it aint happening Jack
Tariffs could work if Trump's administration makes being an illegal immigrant a criminal offense. That way 5 to 10 million Americans become inmates who can be compelled to work for wages lower than a Chinese factory. The tariff would be the one two punch to coerce corporations that believe slavery is evil.
It wouldn't produce more jobs. If anything there'd be less. But fewer jobs gives people the incentive to commit crimes which means more labor for the factories.
If they run out of people all they'll have to do is find someone who spoke ill of Trump on social media and declare them an enemy of the state. I'm sure Elon Musk would have no problem turning those records over. It also might explain why he pegged the former head of the FCC to head the FBI.

Having everything manufactured here is not the purpose. This is a move to balance trade. It's not shortsighted as people like a say, it's actually a long term play. Think CHIPS Act which Biden implemented and is good for the economy. That along with the original Trump tariffs are bringing chip manufacturing back stateside, but we're so out the loop in that industry it's hard even find people qualified to do the manufacturing because we don't even a good base of workers, but it will improve over time.
When it comes to stuff like shoes, clothes, that's all fine staying over there, but I'm talking about auto, heavy industry, areas that we didn't need to outsource, but because a corporation only operates on maximizing profits the American worker got fucked and now every jobs is a middle management service economy job which is not balanced. The excuse that US consumers won't pay is the same one they always use and honestly it's bullshit. We have high inflation currently. Damn what they are saying. Real prices at still high and it has nothing to do with where products are being manufactured. It's corporate greed so people will need to adjust/acclimate and they will but, bringing more jobs back is good for the average workers. I grew in Detroit so this outsourcing thing I'm very familiar with how it actually impacts the economy when those jobs go away. They want ya'll in middle management desk jobs and that ain't good for everyone. It will be some pain, I'm not oblivious to that fact, but it's better in the long run. We just been kicking this can down the road and this high employment that they keep touting is bullshit. The "Gig economy" is making things seem like everyone is doing good, but a job is not a career and that shit don't have benefits so people are employed and still suffering from being under paid.

I mostly agree with this take. But I think it's even more nuanced and complicated than that. For example, let's say Trump puts a 100% tariffs on China. So what? Companies work out deals with Chinese companies to circumvent said tariffs. In the cases that can't be done, a more likely outcome would be U.S. companies buy from a country that charge slightly more than China on services and goods, and it's business as usual. There are no scenarios where U.S. companies just sit back and accept it and buy 100% American. It's simply to expensive for most things. Even if they wanted to, the manufacturing infrastructure in the U.S. isn't in place.
