This is how you reboot a show. I can feel the spirit of the original characters in these new versions, Aunt Viv has elements of both Janet Hubert and Daphne Reid's versions and the easter eggs are fun to find.

Yes, it's going to have a touch of All-American but you won't come away feeling like this is All-American with cursing as people did with #BlackAF and Blackish.

Just hope the writers have the courage to take characters and storylines in different directions, the worst thing this reboot can do is recycle storylines from the sitcom and have people seeing the payoffs coming a mile away.

Making Lisa, Carlton's ex is a good move, IMO. Yes it does introduce her much earlier but it works well with this version of Carlton, which I have to say is a true villain in this version.

The casting of Carlton was TERRIBLE.
He’s obviously Nigerian and doesn’t look like he’s even part of the Banks family.
He’s playing the villain role well tho, but he doesn’t fit the description of Carlton Banks.

I think it is just okay so far.. meh

I will say the cinematography that everyone has been raving about has been incredible. The casting, for the most part, has been pretty good as well.

I dunno.. it just feels kind of soulless, maybe it's because the first episode seems like it's rehashing and retconning the entire Fresh Prince series in one episode.

I like that it is extra Philly. His mannerisms and dialogue seem like every person from Philly I know

Will didn't seem to have too many Philly-isms in the original series
When he asked the chef at Uncle Phil’s party to make a West Philly cheesteak and it had a crunch to it, I was like, that’s a LA cheesesteak made with a baguette.

:hithead:

But I get wym.

Whelp, it was bound to happen sooner or later, just didn't expect it to be that character. But after watching Chucky (most of it) I'm not surprised.

Easter Egg back to the original when Uncle Phil bought Will a cheesesteak and Will dismissed it because it wasn't authentic.

Uncle Phil is so joyless and wooden in this. Carlton is off to me as well. They need to add some joy to this family imo.

I like the new take on the show. The fun part is catching all of the call backs to the original series, like Will's Philly friend Trey who was played by Don Cheadle originally (and the guy they cast does look like a young Don). Or the basketball game against Malibu Prep, based off the episode where Allen Payne guest stars as another black kid from the hood who can ball (explains why he asks you ain't really from Malibu are you) and Will throws the game.

They also showed parts from the original theme song, particularly the missing verse about his flight to LA. He sat first class and they served him OJ in a champagne glass. The fuzzy dice in the mirror of Jazz's car as he takes him to Bel Air for the first time. Plus, I really liked that they made Jazz his uber driver and the first person he meets in LA because the original series never really fleshed out how he became such good friends with Jazz (since we all knew in real life they were a rap duo) so that touch definitely adds more to the character.

The only complaints I have are the heavy use of "jawn", we get it he's from Philly, and Geoffrey being less of a butler and more Uncle Phil's live-in buddy. Looking forward to seeing what more they do with the series.

Bel-Air star Cassandra Freeman compares Hollywood to a boyfriend who 'likes to get jealous'

Freeman was joined by Sue Ann Pien, Heléne Yorke, and Ryan Michelle Bathé for EW's Bold School panel at SCAD TVfest.

By Lauren HuffFebruary 19, 2022 at 01:00 PM EST

Hollywood is a fickle beast.
Just ask Bel-Air star Cassandra Freeman, who recalls what ABC Executive Director of Casting Marcy Phillips once told her. "[She said], 'Cassie, if there was just something else you were more interested in, your career will just take off.' It's like this industry is like a boyfriend, you know, it likes to get jealous, but if it knows you're available, it don't want you as much," Freeman recounted as part of EW's Bold School panel at the 10th annual SCAD TVfest. "It's so funny — it's so grossly true," fellow panelist, The Other Two star Helene Yorke, added.
The actresses were joined by fellow actors Sue Ann Pien, who currently stars on Amazon Prime's As We See It, and The Endgame's Ryan Michelle Bathé. Together, the stars shared anecdotes about life lessons and talked about how they found their voice and brought strong characters to life on screen.
On the subject of children, Pien praised the moms on the panel for their strength. "That's incredible! You're birthing humanity with your vaginas," she said.

Pien also shared how she brings strength to her own roles. "I think women go through a lot of stuff. Speaking for myself, I've had a hard life. Life was hard, and now I'm finding ways to imbue my characters and my acting with some of these experiences that if you're not a woman, you wouldn't understand because you didn't go through that," she says, adding, "It's very gender-specific heartbreaks and hardships that sometimes we carry — and that is strength to me."
The Savannah College of Art and Design's annual event celebrating all things television and streaming took place virtually Feb. 17-19. In addition to festival media partner EW's Bold School panel and other exclusive content, the fest saw This Is Us's Milo Ventimiglia honored with the Virtuoso Award. Judy Greer, coming to TV screens this spring alongside Renée Zellweger in The Thing About Pam, received the Vanguard Award. Ed Helms and Randall Park, who have teamed up for Peacock's True Story with Ed and Randall, received the Spotlight Award.

I just watched 4 episodes and I think it's cool. I expected the worst, but it's keeping my attention. They could have chosen a different actor for Carlton for sure. The guy isn't believable. Idk how I feel about the Geoffrey character too. I like that he isn't just some butler, but what is he?

Love the fact that it isn't toned down.
