Re: Black Men & Stress: Have you ever had a horrible run of BAD LUCK & How did u deal

I've been more stressed at this point in my life than any other. Daughter just turned two. My stepson is starting high school in September. Stepdaughter has all sorts of mental issues, and her mother can't get tough with her. And, I can do little about it because technically, she ain't my daughter. Two women. Bouncing back and forth between them, jumping from one argument with one to an argument with another. Two hour commute daily. And, tens of thousands of dollars in debt, dealing with mistakes in my youth. Shit is crazy.

Job doesn't cover all the bills, if it wasn't for my side hustle, I would have drowned a long time ago. I'm going from check to check, and at the end of the day, I have little money for myself. Let alone enough to pay off my debts.

Just got to keep going. Here's what helps me:
1. Stress relief. Sex. Punching bag. Treadmill. Either one helps me to zone out. Afterwards, I feel better. I'm hitting the bag tonight, looking forward to it.

2. Discipline. The only way to survive. I'm working on tightening my budget, and not spending on frivolous shit.

3. Grind. Life isn't a movie. Some people get huge breaks, most of us get smaller breaks. Take advantage of it, remember that in order for anything to change, you have to work at it consistently.

4. Talking about it helps. Especially to elders, sometimes they have an immediate answer to what's bothering you cause they already agonized over it.

5. Stereotypes. Funny, but the fact that I've been taught that a man has to be strong, keeps me there when all else fails. When none of the above works, I suck it up, and go through steps one through four.

6. Strength. Understand that the American definition of strength is bullshit.

7. Failure. It's ok to fail. You WILL fail at one point in your life. It's ok to be broken up about it, even to cry about it. Even if you got to go off by yourself ( a dark bathroom with the shower running helps ) and take a few minutes to get yourself together. Tell people that you ate some bad Mexican food or something. It's ok to fail. It's NOT ok to quit.

Shit happens. We won't all be rich, we won't all have expensive clothes or cars. But, we CAN be better men. We can't control everything, but we can control ourselves.

that's real!!!

2010 was the worst year of my life. A reckless driver totaled my car. Tried to sue and got no money in return. I moved out of state with a resume, and IT certs thinking I was gonna "MAKE IT". As the months winded down, money depleted, and I found myself still with no job. I believed in laws of attraction and all that mumbo jumbo which proved to be bullshit to be honest. Then shit got real bad, I was on the verge of being evicted with no food in the fridge or anything. There were some nights where I literally starved. After not finding the dream job, getting kicked out the apartment, and going broke, I had a nervous break down and had to move back home with fam.....Biggest lesson I learned is doing what you love can be overrated, doing what works is more sensible.....Life is a muthafucka

Forgive me for asking but how do you watch yourself go broke in the U.S. When there are emeegency temp jobs that you can take to prevent that.

When you are overqualified for jobs and underqualified for the rest, you can get boxed out of the market. In that case your options are extremely limited. As a result, I decided to go back to school and change careers. The pain of focusing on a comeback is far lesser than the pain of hitting rock bottom. Although Im still a work in progress, I am happier than I was at that point.

Good shit!

I'm also thinking about going back to school. I've been accepted twice before I didn't go, but like you I was stressed out then.

Now my situation is a lot different and I feel like I can focus and get the job done with ease.

Re: Black Men & Stress: Have you ever had a horrible run of BAD LUCK & How did u deal

a few things I try to keep in mind during tough times - which for me has been the past 3 years at least:

- The Dalai Lama said 'when you lose, don't lose the lesson'. [learned of this quote from Dave Chappelle]

- Life truly is a roller coaster, ups and downs. The past 3 years for me seemed to be ALL downhill, (wife been sick, moving 4x, being poor) but just keep pushing on. After a while I realized that with all da trials and drama I faced and was so focused on, I was chipping away at other lingering issues and refining myself during that time. A promotion suddenly came my way at work, bills that I finally paid off over the past year just adds to the money I've already saved, which puts me closer to my goal of buying a home...

- Prayer does work, but I just hate that that's all anyone you try to talk to has to offer. Also, be mindful of WHO you're trying to get advice from during hard times. I learned the hard way that most people don't really aspire for anything and just spew out whatever nonsense makes them feel better about THEMSELVES.....because they've never done anything for themselves. Don't let their static nature infect you.

Those things, along with music and meditation, have helped me cope. You'll get through, believe that. Just keep working and you'll get where you need to be. Just don't despair! If anything, anger is much more useful.

Play this. Put it on repeat.

And remember that hope is the most powerful force in the universe. I got this from Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Sandman was fighting against a demon in possesion of something of his.

CHORONZON: I am a dire wolf, prey-stalking, lethal prowler.

MORPHEUS: I am a hunter, horse-mounted, wolf-stabbing.

CHORONZON: I am a horsefly, horse-stinging, hunter-throwing.

MORPHEUS: I am a spider, fly-consuming, eight legged.

CHORONZON: I am a snake, spider-devouring, posion-toothed.

MORPHEUS: I am an ox, snake-crushing, heavy-footed.

CHORONZON: I am an anthrax, butcher bacterium, warm-life destroying.

MORPHEUS: I am a world, space-floating, life-nurturing.

CHORONZON: I am a nova, all-exploding... planet-cremating.

MORPHEUS: I am the Universe -- all things encompassing, all life embracing.

CHORONZON: I am Anti-Life, the Beast of Judgement. I am the dark at the end of everything. The end of universes, gods, worlds... of everything. Sss. And what will you be then, Dreamlord?

MORPHEUS: I am hope.

Re: Black Men & Stress: Have you ever had a horrible run of BAD LUCK & How did u deal

Ok ok ok ok, I'll give you the secret to the universe.

Step 1- Realize it's not real. What you call reality is just an illusion, Maya. Only the EXPERIENCE is real. Everybody comes to this conclusion in different ways but most never really found this out till after their soul leaves their body. But if you can feel this truth while your still in the body your half way there.

Step 2-Your point of power is your ability to FEEL GOOD NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. This is the tough one because we've been taught to react to our cirucumstances rather than chose them with our thoughts. Your reality in nothing more then your EMOTIONAL STATE. Period. So if you can put your self in a GOOD FEELING STATE no matter what than you've one the game of life. The key is to put your ATTENTION on HOW YOU FEEL rather then on what you see. Because REMEMBER WHAT YOU SEE IS AN ILLUSION AND WHAT YOU FEEL IS REAL.

Step 3- Appreciation for ALL THAT IS.

Good luck mudafuckas.

Re: Black Men & Stress: Have you ever had a horrible run of BAD LUCK & How did u deal

Great thread!!

Theres a lot of mental illnesses in the Black community as a whole that needs to be addressed. A lot of us tend to hold things in (im guilty of this at times) because we fear being criticized or attacked. Its like a defense mechanism. But its healthy to RELEASE. You can release via writing stuff down, talking to someone about your problems or typing about it on BGOL. Theres many ways to release.....just make sure that you do it!!!

Anyways.....
Everyone has experienced some form of stress. Physical or mental. How you handle that stress is what defines you.

Honestly, ive never been in a SUPER stressful situation. Im an emotional guy, but i dont stay emotional for long. I quickly get over shit.

Im super resilient. Im Intuitive. I listen more than i speak. I observe a lot...I think a lot. Ive had hours of alone time everyday single day of my life for about 85% of my life (childhood - adulthood). That alone time gave me a chance to decompress and put things in order. I know when someone or something aint worth a shit and is destined to cause a problem. When i see a problem.....i distance myself from it. It can be my own Mother or Child. If i see my Mother or Child is a problem...then im gonna distance myself from my Mother & Child. Simple as that!!

IM PRIORITY #1 IN MY LIFE. I love my family....but no one comes before me. If im ill, how can i help others???

When its all said and done i'll make sure that im safe. Stress kills....therefore I keep stress out of my life as much as possible. Having a child right now would put a lot of stress in my life....therefore...i dont have kids. Get it??

You control more than what you think you control. If youre stressed about something....its mainly because youve allowed yourself to be stressed.

Adapt..survive!!!

Most of the things we stress about aint worth stressing over.
Just think about it.......
Stop giving a fuck about trivial shit and be happy
:D

Re: Black Men & Stress: Have you ever had a horrible run of BAD LUCK & How did u deal

I chased money and moved to the west coast and was in trouble from the minute i got out there. Completely lost everything except my woman who stuck with me through it. Moved back home, first time my girl and I lived separate. Had a long time to think about my life and the problems that got me to where i was at.

The most valuable lesson that I learned.

If you cant accept change, life is going to be very hard for you. Life is a rollercoaster ride and nothing stays the same forever. Panicking and Complaining accomplish nothing.

With that said...

1. As long as my brain was surrounded and open to negativity that was there I was doomed to stay.

2. THe only difference between me and successful people is that they tried and I didnt. and when i say try, I mean doing everything in my life without half-assing it. I was always looking to do half the work, but make all the money. Find shortcuts everywhere i could. I accepted the fact that I just wasnt putting the effort in that other people who were on the level I wanted to be on, were putting in. I started getting up at 6am, and treated learning programming like it was a job. I stopped procrastinating. I would always miss out on things that would have made life so much easier if I wouldve just got to it when i heard about something. I shot myself in the foot a lot and i reached a point of being sick of being like that. Also got into shape. If i wasnt working a job, I could at least feel good about myself.

3. I wrote down all of my problems/things i hated about myself and thought of a solution/solutions for each one and started working on it one by one, which is the mentality that programming has given me.

4. When life is on the upswing, I focused on paying off my debt. The least amount of people with their hands out asking for money I dont have, the better.

5. Kicked my prejudices to the curb, and found "good people" and hold on to them. We made it though because of reliable friends and family.

6. Youtube is the greatest tool ever created and I will always fight for it to be free. Ive learned to program enough to change careers, I fix my own car which is saving me tons of money. Fixing your own car is a great way to stay out of debt.

7. Learn a trade in addition to your daily job. When my first 3d job went bad, I bartended. When my second Graphic design job went bad, I reconditioned cars. Service jobs have been easier to come across.

8. I always reinvent myself. If someone tells me that I havent changed a bit, i consider that an insult. Need new views and skills for changing times. I talk to older people who have struggled longer than i have, and younger people who have time to keep up to date on changing technology and they give me the cliff notes so i stay competitive.

...and most important of all, Always have a plan. People dream about where they want to be in life, and when they get there they have no clue what to do. Think about the outcome becuase I discovered that getting out of the hole was easier than staying out of the hole.

I hear dat shit..

I just think some folks dont need a lot to be happy,

and some folks need things and a certain lifestyle to feel good

about themselves..

neither is wrong or right its whatever works for you...

I tend to need very little... as long as I can visit somewhere different

that you cant go without a passport at least ten times every five years..

Im happier than a cat in rat town..

too many folks tryin follow other people and their happiness...

instead of discovering and pursing their own...

lol you feel for it hook line and sinker

http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs...13/04/17/why-you-shouldnt-follow-your-passion

- What's more boring? Failing at having even the basic necessities of life (and forget about hobbies) because you "pursued your passion" or getting a decent job you don't hate for 40 hours a week and then being able to indulge in your passion on your own terms? (e.g. I love cars, as does my dad. But my dad became a mechanic because he loved to work on cars. His projects have always languished and been sold off because he just has no passion for them. That love is gone. I went into science, and while I *like* what I do, it isn't a deep passion. But on the evenings and weekends I participate in shows and organized races and cruises and have fun with my friends who are also into them. So how is that boring?)

- Passion does not equate to a real-life business plan. Passion is the average person's euphemism for "no real sustainable business plan." My boss, who had been a commercial lender for over 30 years, said that the best loan customer is someone who has no passion whatsoever, just a desire to work hard at something that looks good on a spreadsheet. Maybe the loan customer wants to start a dry-cleaning store or invest in a fast-food franchise—boring stuff. That's the person you bet on. You want the grinder, not the guy who loves his job.

- Anyone can have passion when something is working, but almost no one will be passionate when it is falling apart. Your passion level generally moves with your success.Success caused passion more than passion caused success. Do not put the cart before the horse. Passion does not equal success. Passion, like compensation, is a trailing factor.

Yup trying to help old friends . You can't force folks to want better. It has come from inside . I just up and left no forwarding address. A quiet neighborhood a deep tissue massage three times a week works wonders.

I've had my days but nothing too long, you just gotta keep living...

I discovered this quote from Epictetus many years ago-

"Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them."

It really put a lot of things in perspective for me. I'm a very autonomous person and I've always been the type to plan/prepare for the worst even though a lot of things are unforeseen.

What I've found works really well for peace of mind is mapping out the months (or year) ahead. That way nothing sneaks up on you at all (especially if you're dealing with rough credit, budgeting, falling behind on payments). It's one thing to have shit written down on calendars, dayplanners, or saved on the smartphone. But what I've done the past 2 years is take some 8 x 11s and either write out (or type out) shit for reference.

For example ... here's some shit I jotted out for quick reference (really helps with budget/finances) ...

- Credit card statement arrives 19th/20th of each month - due 8th - 10th of following month
- Reference 2 - 3 accounts for transfers & deposits (Savings, TFSA, RRSP, Chequing, etc) - aim for start of each 2nd month
- Feb. - Annual utilities due
- Feb / April / June / Aug / Oct / Dec - Hydro billing
- April - home insurance due
- May - car insurance due
- July - Annual property taxes due
- Oct - Passport expires mid-month - get same re-upped in the months prior
- Staff meetings ...
- April / Oct - dental appts
- March / Aug - Family in town
- Sept / Dec - Book vacation / lieu day coverage
- End of the year - start looking into new car purchase for 2016 or 2017
- etc.

These are great and I decided last week to start putting aside 2 hours every day for personal development, not necessarily related improving my job. Just getting better, whether its an hour at the gym or reading a book. Something to learn thats different....

With debt...I don't have a lot of it but what I do have is kind of nagging at me. I've set my sights on being out of debt (except for mortgage) by 2017. Gonna have to make some drastic cuts though, but it will get done.

Brothas - all bullshit aside, this thread has truly helped me more than y'all know. I finally started changing my diet, hitting planet fitness (fuck yall - it was close to the house and they had massage chairs) and most importantly meditating/praying.

It has literally brought a sense of calmness. I thought it was some bullshit - but I needed to get out of the house and bring perspective to where I was at in life. I was literally re-enforcing negativity around me.

Finally - I stopped worrying about fake folks or perception or getting fired. Just enjoy the fact that I had good people around me, my health and a good woman. The rest of the shit is for the birds man. Started doing better on my job (without even realizing it) - I'm still getting there - but sometimes you need to step away to see the big picture, the forrest from the trees. Sometimes you gotta laugh at the crazy shit and focus on what you can control.

Much appreciated brothas - keep pushing.

Congrats on taking those initial steps man. They are HUGE!! Stay focused and keep it up. Amazing the changes that begin to take place once you change your environment and start getting that blood and those endorphins flowing. It truly helps get everything going.
