Some might argue sales figures of old were hindered by the inconvenience of having to go to a store and buy a physical copy. I remember reports of so n so being "sold out." At certain retailers. How many sales were lost to mfkrs not wanting to drive from store to store? Now mfkrs just gotta make a few clicks on their phone or computer and voila.

And with that ease of access is a lower volume of actual sales but a huge spike in streams. Which is why they had to make an algorithm to turn streams to sales... they had to quantify 1 Million or 1 Billion streams into something because the labels are getting paid for those streams. the artist and behind the scenes folks deserve a piece of that pie.
I can tell you right now people going to the store to buy albums, tapes, etc....was not a problem because there were records stores right in the neighborhoods and people weren't stuck in their homes on video games, etc....

Damn no KRS One, Black Thought, Rakim, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, Andre 3000, Qtip, . Just making the argument that there is NO WAY Drake can be top 5 all time. So Yes I agree with you. Take the artists in groups OUT, for arguments sake, and Drake still doesn't have a spot on the Top 5

LL Cool J are similar in the emotional hip hop lane, but no fucking way Drake is better all time than LL.

Drake ain't better than Kendrick in his own era. Diddy is looking at the money generated at the the major factor in his assessment.

3000 is no for me
forgot black thought
Ll is my top even though I dropped him out after that country song
Qtip is no

Chuck D/KRS/Kane/Rakim really all came before my ears could appreciate what they were saying.

Drake may very well be relevant today and I don't knock him or his hustle, but he don't have thirty plus years in the game or the impact like a Melly Mel, Ice Cube, or Chuck D. Even uptight elderly white folks know the words or nod their heads to the Message, Today was a good day, and Don't believe the hype. If not they sure don't change the station until the songs done. Anyways, call me biased (I am) but any top five that doesn't begin with a true blue hip hop pioneer like Rakim or the brother Black Thought on the list should probably ball up their paper and start the test all over again. Just saying.

I can skip about 2 or 3. Make Me Proud was corny to me. Didn’t like Headlines either but I might’ve just got burned out on that but I skip those two for sure.
And “his” classic is one thing but the not a classic album. Nellys classic album would be Country Grammer but it ain’t a classic album.

I hear you, but for me I can listen to it too to bottom.

I don’t care for “Halftime” on Illmatic, the album’s still a classic.

lol. He's nowhere near the top 5 ARTISTS of all time. I give the dude credit because he found his niche and he works the fuck out of it. But when you say "artist," you're talking about anybody who's ever sung or played an instrument. I can think of 50 people off the top of my head who Drake couldn't hold their charts.
But he sells records, no denying that. In that, I suppose he's near the top but we also have to remember record sales are calculated a lot differently these days.

I dont even know how anyone can compare hits in this era with previous eras. Mofos are going gold and platinum without even selling records but because of streaming :hmm: so comparing all these hits, milestones, numbers shit etc etc to previous eras seems a little fugazi to me.....
it's really not that complicated bro

Joe and them were talking about this on the podcast...in order to be considered one of the greatest ever...how many albums do you need to have? like if you have two good albums...can you really say that you're one of the greats..im thinking specifically about Biggie...

The thing with Biggie is the whole NY being carried on his back especially when the West coast was racking up all those hits with Dre and Snoop. Biggie had impact and left a mark during what some may say was the real last renaissance for NY hip hop. His contenders were very strong. With that said, Diddy's marketing stuck with calling him "The Goat" and this may happen with Drake after him calling his top 5.

I agree, but go tell a new generation rapper this or new generation fan. A lot won't get how different it is. I always throw in the big question that if guys like Biggie had IG and so on with his love triangle drama how much followers or streams he would get? These guys had real drama that wasn't even partly orchestrated as some stuff today in hip hop are.

Some might argue sales figures of old were hindered by the inconvenience of having to go to a store and buy a physical copy. I remember reports of so n so being "sold out." At certain retailers. Well, I know in terms of the stream thing that people would listen at booths in stores to music without even buying the music and just waited to get a copy on tape or cd. There wasn't something constructed to take into account bootlegs of music into the numbers.

Well the 70's cats would say those 80's/90's kids couldn't dance for shit too lol

Shit he ain’t top nothing as a singer either. Hell I won’t even put him top as rappers who sing too. Maybe too 5 pop singer? I’d put him ahead of Britney Spears lol.
I've always seen dude as a pop singer that can rhyme. His foundation is built on taking elements of everyone's culture and making it a hit.

I remember when he started doing the Dancehall/Reggae vibes and Caribbean folks were up in arms. Did the same thing with the UK Grime scene. It's what he does. And that's cool, go make your money. Just don't step into a hip hop arena thinking you're king cause we got several Pusha T's waiting in line to dethrone that fraud.

And that will NEVER end.

Yeah there's a thin line between paying homage and straight up jacking. Drake blurs those lines far too often.

I wasn’t comparing them, just saying that A song on a classic project that I didn’t like and the album’s still a classic.
But I'm saying just because you don't like a record doesn't make it a bad record. Like I'm over "Headlines" but I can admit it wasn't a bad record. Haltime is not a go-to joint of mine but it still fits into that puzzle.

I was laughing like shit when he strolled into that DJ Premier/RZA battle. Like bruh, there’s nothing here for you to cry on, why you even in here?
You know him man that's his way of showing up to the All Star game and Super Bowl. He always gotta be seen and shit. That's his way of doing it while we in quarantine. He didn't wan to be seen when Pusha came for his head though. Couldn't' find that nigga then.

I get that but streaming is not sales. And like u said people can buy the music with clicks now. So I'm not saying digital sales can't compare to physical sales. That is a more accurate comparison. But comparing streams, which isn't sales, to sales is fugazi. Streaming is a form of radio play. They need to come up with something different. And of course they were fucking the artist but that's a whole different conversation......

No lie that's what soured me on Aubrey. To even say some shit like that.......and he got away with it.

I remember back in the day the OG's like Pimp C use to come at dudes head for being soft like that. Ain't nobody like that now. Partly because Aubrey does a good job of befriending everyone but man that should've been checked by one of these OG's out here.

I agree. Shit needs to have a asterisk by it. By this time all the records people like Mariah, Whitney and Michael broke is gonna be broken by niggas like Billie Eilish, Drake and Cardi B. Shit gonna be crazy. Its gonna eliminate the legends from the record books.

Jermaine Dupri was trying to make this point with Mariah Carey and Lil Nas X and a lot of people were saying he was being a grump old uncle.

Not only is it not sales but its also been proven that there's a cheat code out there to get your streaming numbers up. Nobody flops no more.

Yeah, this is a little secret that gets glossed over.

Yeah and I Feel bad when I was younger I use to be one of them people that called these people "old" when they were speaking facts. Like when people use to talk about Soulja Boy trash. Here my dumbass go saying "He trash but he getting money though....". We enabled this dumb ass shit.

Now the OG's don't say shit no more because we rule them off as grumpy and old. When Jay told people to stop taking pictures with the money phone they called him old. And it was old ass niggas calling him old and grumpy. Somebody gotta protect our history.

I hate to break it to you, but none of those guys were relevant after their first 4 or 5 years in the game. Those dudes wouldn't even be considered under ground artists at this point.

You're right it's not. Streaming isn't sales....

By your logic, no classic albums have existed nor will exist in the future since the moment technology changed the predominant delivery medium.

We not going backward, so I guess the last classic cd you bought at tower records was it for classics. Dassit. No more classics yall.

You sound completely ignorant. Stop saying stupid shit. Stop bringing up totally different things. I repeat streaming is not selling period. Artist aren't even getting paid the same for streams. All streaming is is a form of radio play. It should be counted like that. Lil uzi "sold" 286k 1st week sales; but actual sales of his songs was like 1k :giggle: :hmm::smh:. Nigga sold 286 without selling anything :hmm::smh: and yet his album is already gold might be platinum by now......shit is fugazi and doesn't add up.....

Ironically enough, Diddy was called grumpy old uncle too when he talked about hip hop needing gatekeepers for quality control.

On a serious note though, black people have seen what not respecting or securing our history has done.
